MOAB- WHITE RIM TRAIL, CANYONLAND NAT. PARK

Moab... One of the most beautiful places in the world. After Christmas Greg and I were feeling the camping bug and needed to go do something, be adventurous. We had talked about riding the White Rim Trail down in Moab for a long time and felt like it would be perfect for the weekend. This trial is usually reserved out 6 months in advance, but being the second wk in January, still freezing cold and snow on the ground... well, not many people are this crazy. The trail was amazing and the scenery was magnificent. We drove about 50 miles in and 50 miles back out on this dirt road that had a few real sketchy spots. We went on a few really cool hikes, one being down to the Colorado River through a narrow, dried up stream channel. Since we were in the nat. park we couldn't have fires, so that made for bundling up at night and hanging out for hours in the car. One thing we didn't take in to account was that it got dark around 5ish every night. Luckily we brought rummy-cube (the number game). To say the least, we had some pretty mean games and then we still had time to kill! We had tons of fun and it was so wonderful to spend time with each other, in fact we didn't see one other car the whole 4 days we were out in the middle of no-where. Little scary if anything would have happened. Oh, we also kept track of the temp. At night it would get down to 17-18 degrees outside and around 30 degrees in the x-terra. Cooolllllldddd!!! During the day it was 40-50 degrees plus wind chill, but always nice a sunny!
The mighty Colorado! So the river on both sides was frozen and the floating white things are all ice chunks. Doesn't that just look and sound cold!
Greg and I next to the frozen Colorado. Greg next to a stream of ice coming from a little spring up above.

K, so we saw a picture like this in a magizine once and decided to make our own advertisment for canyonlands... k, kinda corky, but the colors and lighting in the picture are really nice.

This was part of the road; there were times where it was cliff on one sid and 300 ft ledge on the other. Not too scary, but imagine trying to pass a car going to opposite direction.

The Canyonlands photo is great. I've seen others do that--go to REI's member page, and you'll see a few :)Always a success!
Sounds like a great time. Matt and I might have to try that sometime. Looks better than doing it in the summer!
